Do you want to be part of an amazing community activity? Do you want to have a fun evening with your friends and family AND support a fantastic charity? Then the movie night is the evening plan for you on October 6th. Come to the baseball field at Rex Putnam High School at 6:30. The movie playing under the stars will be Ratatouille and it starts playing at 7 pm. Bring your own chair and blankets, but concessions are provided.
This amazing movie night is being organized by three of Rex Putnam’s own students: Annabella Anderson, Noelle Alfino, and Claire Jones. They have come up with this idea as a part of their CAS long-term project to earn their IB Diplomas. The IB Diploma is one of the most profound Diplomas one can achieve at the school level. It is incredibly rigorous and anyone who achieves it should be incredibly proud of themselves. CAS stands for “Creative, Active, Service”, which means every diploma candidate needs to complete at least 150 hours of extracurricular activities. “Doing the IB Diploma has seriously come with its challenges, but CAS is not a stressful part of the IB, rather fulfilling,” mentioned Alfino. Parts of CAS can be something simple like going to the gym and working on one’s physical health or mediating and helping your mental health. It is really anything you can set your mind on that either helps yourself or the community.
“We really wanted to give back to our community. All proceeds we make that evening will go to the Oregon Humane Society. I personally have 12 animals that I love dearly, so choosing their charity was a no-brainer for me,” said Anderson. The Oregon Humane Society is an animal shelter that is also a second chance shelter. They rescue hundreds of animals every year from all over the country but are based in Portland and Salem. Not only do they take in animals from the street and people who can longer provide for their pets, but they also rescue animals from kill shelters around the country. They rely on donors to support their animal adoption, education, medical, and humane law enforcement programs. If you are interested in donating to their cause, simply look up the Oregon Humane Society and donate on their homepage. The way Anderson, Alfino, and Jones have set up their donations to the Oregon Humane Society is by having attendees donate as an entrance fee. Both Venmo and cash are accepted right at the entrance and there is a separate donation jar as well. While you can pay what you wish to enter, concessions will be between 1-2 dollars only.
The three of them have been working especially hard to get the word out about this evening. There are posters in almost every single classroom all around Putnam, scattered around the hallways. There are posts on the North Clackamas District’s Instagram (@nc12schools) and the official Rex Putnam Instagram (@rexputnamhs). Furthermore, there is a Facebook event set up and a post on nextdoor.com. A way you can help promote this movie night for charity is by spreading the information to your friends and loved ones. Not only is it going to be really fun, but also for a great cause. Another way you can help if you like is by signing up to volunteer. Simply email Annabella Anderson at [email protected] for more information on how to help. It counts either towards your CAS hours or NHS hours.
There was a poll sent out to the students of Rex Putnam to decide on which movie will be lighting up the sky and it was a very close win with Ratatouille. “I think it’s good that ratatouille one the poll because it is about animals and the Oregon Humane Society primarily works for animals,” explained Jones. The movie one with 30.8% of voters chose Ratatouille.
So, what are you waiting for? Mark your calendars and come to the Baseball field at Rex Putnam High School on October 6th between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. to support a great cause. Bring your blankets and chairs and enjoy Ratatouille under the stars with your friends and family!
