Counselor Chosen From MHS
Roberto Aguilar, Oregon’s Counselor of the Year, has one of the hardest jobs a human can do in education and this Milwaukie counselor has exceeded the job itself. It takes a special type of person to deal with real people and their very real problems, it takes guts and a lot of time and effort to help humans, kids especially and making sure they are safe and protected to your full ability.
We wonder what it’s like to do this job, what’s it like to take care of people, their mental state especially. “ Its pretty cool I think first of all, and I feel like there is so many different parts to being a counselor, I think sometimes you’re a cheerleader, sometimes an investigator trying to figure out what the mystery is to help the student be successful. Sometimes there is so much that you hear that’s sad, and that makes it a challenging part of being a counselor, but then there is also great times where students are so happy about whatever and you get to be a part of that. Its really involved, deep, cool like i said at first it’s cool being a counselor.”
Being chosen as counselor of the year is a very big deal. He not only is just counselor of the year, he’s counselor of the year in the state of Oregon. “ I think it’s awesome. I know that I work hard. I know that I try to help every student. There was a big application I had to submit, evidence, data, why I should be chosen and one of the big things that the school saw was the closing graduation gap between Latino students and caucasian students. They were equal pretty much at this time. I wish we were at 100% graduation rate, but it’s more like 76-78%, so I keep pushing to get everyone to get 100 percent. That’d be awesome”. It’s one of his goals to make kids as successful as they possibly can be.
He’s wanted to be a counselor since 16 and he’s made very big waves in his field of work. We would like to thank you, Mr. Roberto Aguilar, for your amazing work with kids and helping them through their lives and problems. You’ve earned that title of Counselor Of The Year with all your hard work and bright personality that gives everyone that little gleam of hope they need.
